Trip Planning Apps: Tools and Services We Personally Use for Our Own Journeys

Do you want to plan your own trip and look for practical tools, helpful apps and trustworthy services? Then you’re in the right place. We’ll show you all the digital helpers we personally use on our own travels. Every tool has been tested by us and honestly reviewed. These trip planning apps and services are especially helpful for road trips. They’ll save you time and help you enjoy your journey even more.

Book flights, rental cars, accommodation and activities with our favorite trip planning apps

Every trip needs a flight, a reliable car, a place to stay and a few ideas for what to do. These are the tools we personally use to organize it all.

Compare and book flights

We use the metasearch tool from Skyscanner* to find flights. It’s especially helpful when your travel dates are flexible.

Find rental cars

We like to use comparison platforms with helpful filters and flexible cancellation policies. That way, you can always find a suitable offer – even last minute.

Book accommodation

We prefer Booking.com for accommodation. In case of problems, their support has always been responsive and fair. Whether it’s a hotel, an apartment or a holiday home – we usually find what we’re looking for.

Discover and book activities

We use GetYourGuide* and Viator* to book tours, tickets or day trips in advance. Many of them offer free cancellation, which gives us peace of mind.

Practical travel apps that make trip planning easier

While on the road, there are a few digital helpers we never want to miss. These apps make everything easier – from navigation to instant translation. They are reliable and always part of our trip planning toolkit.

Navigation with Google Maps

We use Google Maps on almost every trip. We save our route, important places and personal notes there. Even offline, the app works reliably and helps us find our way around.

Translation on the go

When we hit a language barrier, we turn to DeepL. The translations often sound more natural than other tools and help with signs, menus or short texts.

Trip planning apps: What you’ll need while on the road

Even during the trip, there are a few essentials you’ll want to have prepared. That includes mobile internet, a reliable way to pay, and good travel insurance. Here’s what we personally use and why.

Mobile internet with eSIM

We use Holafly for mobile internet while traveling. The app is easy to use and the eSIM gets activated in just a few minutes. That way we stay connected and can find our way around without issues.

Paying with credit card

We always take at least two credit cards with us to be on the safe side. For us, it’s important that the cards work worldwide, don’t charge fees, and allow free withdrawals. Some providers even include travel insurance.

Travel health insurance

We originally added travel insurance through our main health insurer for convenience. But if you compare options, you’ll often find better coverage at a lower price.
