During our Algarve road trip, just like on most of our journeys, we enjoyed a wonderful horse-riding experience. In total, we have been horse riding in the Algarve three times, and each time it was a truly beautiful adventure.
For our rides, we once chose a riding stable in the western Algarve* near the village of Carrapateira and twice a riding stable near Armação de Pêra. We can wholeheartedly recommend both riding stables to you.
At both stables, it is immediately obvious that the horses are well taken care of and that the owners put a lot of effort into ensuring their well-being. Furthermore, the rides take place in stunning landscapes. During both experiences, we were treated to spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding countryside.
Tip: Both riding stables are also suitable for children and beginners with no prior riding experience. The instructors make a great effort to ensure that safety always comes first.
Horse Riding in the Western Algarve near Carrapateira
If you are staying at an accommodation in the western Algarve* around Lagos or Sagres, it makes perfect sense to book the riding stable in Carrapateira*. Sagres, in our opinion, is the unofficial gateway to the surfer hotspots of southern Portugal. As a result, you’ll find that the vibe and cool factor here are higher compared to the eastern Algarve. Both Sagres and Carrapateira exude a laid-back surfer spirit, and you’ll immediately notice that these places are deeply influenced by the surfing culture.

The tiny village of Carrapateira and the riding stable are idyllically located in the Costa Vicentina nature reserve, nestled between two vast sandy beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia de Bordeira. The Pontal headland rises between these beaches, marked by its bizarre and steep cliffs that majestically plunge into the sea.
Praia do Amado beach, which belongs to Carrapateira, is very popular with surfers and bodyboarders who appreciate the unique atmosphere and the challenging waves. The exceptional location in the nature reserve, combined with the breathtaking cliffs of Pontal, makes Carrapateira a perfect spot for horse-riding excursions, especially for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

The riding stable is perfectly adapted to the surrounding landscape. In addition to horse riding, you can also learn how to surf or take a trip with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP).
Our horse-riding excursion took us through the nature reserve, across hills, along the beach, and into the wilderness. We enjoyed stunning views of the sea and the surrounding nature along the way. Our horses were very relaxed, and the instructors were friendly and welcoming. You can book your ride in Carrapateira here*.
Horse Riding along the Cliffs of the Algarve Coast

If your accommodation is centrally located or in the eastern Algarve*, we recommend the riding stable in the seaside town of Armação de Pêra. The stable is conveniently situated between the towns of Benagil and Armação de Pêra.
What makes this riding tour particularly special is the route. It begins with a cross-country ride towards the coast. After about 20 minutes, you will reach the cliffs of the Algarve coastline. The view from there, overlooking the rocks and the sea, is truly breathtaking and an unforgettable experience. At certain points, the trail even takes you quite close to the edge of the cliffs.
The owners of the riding stable, Silke and Helder, are very experienced and, at the same time, genuinely friendly. A great advantage is that both speak fluent German, making communication easy for German-speaking visitors.
A little parking tip: You’ll reach the riding stable via an unpaved road. Just before you turn right towards the stable, you’ll see a large tree on the right side. There is a small parking sign hanging from the tree. Park your car there and walk the last 100 meters, as it’s not possible to drive any closer to the stable.

The riding stable is called Solid Rocks Algarve Horse Trail Adventures.
Address: R. Vale de Engenho, 8400-490 Porches, Portugal

We wish you lots of fun and an exciting time on your horse-riding adventure in the Algarve!
