This autumn we spontaneously decided to take a mini cruise from Kiel to Oslo. We had never tried a cruise before, but this short route immediately caught our attention. A mini cruise is the perfect way to combine the sea, relaxation and a city break.
From Berlin to Kiel – The Start of Our Journey

Our journey began in Berlin. We took the ICE to Hamburg and continued by regional train to Kiel. The route is comfortable, and arriving at the small main station is pleasantly stress-free.
We decided to spend the day exploring Kiel. Some of the city’s main sights include the Town Hall with its tall tower, St. Nikolai Church, the Hörnbrücke bridge and the small lake right in the city centre. The shopping street and the Seebar by the fjord are also perfect for a relaxed walk by the water.
For one night we stayed at the Hotel Holiday Inn – the niu Welly Kiel by IHG*. The hotel is centrally located on Andreas-Gayk-Strasse, just a few minutes from the market square. Its location makes it ideal for exploring Kiel on foot.

On Board the Color Fantasy – Our Mini Cruise Begins
The next day we boarded the Color Fantasy. Technically it is a ferry, yet it feels like a full-size cruise ship. At over 220 metres long, it is impressive in scale and offers a surprising level of comfort.
On board you’ll find restaurants, bars, two nightclubs, a spa and even a swimming pool. There are also small boutiques, a fitness centre and cosy lounges with sea views. The journey across the Baltic Sea is calm, the horizon wide and the sky ever-changing – unmistakably Scandinavian.

Sustainability at Sea
Interestingly, the Color Fantasy is one of the most modern ships of its kind. It uses shore power connections and advanced exhaust cleaning systems that reduce sulphur emissions by more than 90 percent. Norway enforces strict environmental standards, and from 2026 only low-emission or zero-emission ships will be allowed to operate in its fjords.
Arrival in Oslo – Between Rain and Charm
We weren’t very lucky with the weather in Oslo. Despite the rain, we grabbed our umbrellas and set out to explore the city. Our first stop was Akershus Fortress, which offers a beautiful view across the water. Just a few minutes away stands the modern Opera House with its striking white marble façade.
From there, it’s only a short walk to Aker Brygge, a lively district filled with cafés, boutiques and restaurants right by the fjord. We warmed up in a cosy café and enjoyed an excellent cappuccino. Even in the rain, Oslo has a special atmosphere and a calm, understated charm.

On board, you can relax with a view, enjoy good food and soak in the Nordic light. If you love Scandinavia and the sea, this route is a wonderful way to experience both.
