The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the most famous landmarks in the Emirates. In this article, you will learn how to get to the mosque, which rules you need to follow, and when the best time to visit is. We also share our personal experiences and tips so that your visit becomes truly unforgettable.

How to Reach the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

The mosque is located just outside the center of Abu Dhabi and can already be seen from the highway. Even if you are traveling from Dubai, the white domes are visible from afar. Directly in front of the complex you will find a huge parking area, comparable in size to football stadiums, so finding a spot is never a problem. From there, escalators take you down into the Al Jami’ Market. This underground mall connects the parking lot with the mosque’s main entrance.

What Should You Wear Inside the Mosque?

The mosque enforces a strict dress code that is carefully checked at the entrance. Women must wear a headscarf, and both men and women must ensure that arms and legs are fully covered. Shorts, sleeveless shirts, as well as tight or transparent clothing are not permitted.

We experienced first-hand how seriously these rules are taken. Two of us had to return to the car to put on long trousers, while the others quickly bought headscarves inside the mall. Fortunately, they were inexpensive and looked quite nice.

For all official rules and guidelines, the mosque provides its own visitor brochure. It includes details about the dress code, opening hours, photo regulations, and even a site map. You can download the official brochure here on the mosque’s website.

How Does Entrance to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Work?

Entrance to the mosque is free of charge. However, you need a ticket with a fixed time slot in order to visit. Without a ticket, access is not possible. Our entry slot was between 5:00 and 5:15 p.m. If you arrive too late, you will not be admitted.

We recommend arriving at least half an hour before your scheduled time slot. This way you can remain relaxed, even if the walk through the mall takes longer than expected.

Why the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is So Special

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest and most impressive mosques in the world. Its absolute highlight is the vast courtyard, which can hold up to 40,000 worshippers.

The four minarets rise over 100 meters into the sky, and the main dome is among the largest mosque domes in the world. The materials are equally impressive. Gleaming white marble, sparkling gold leaf, and fine details dominate the architecture. Inside, you will find a hand-knotted carpet from Iran, the largest of its kind worldwide.

The chandeliers are particularly fascinating. They are made of gilded brass and stainless steel and decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier comes from Munich. Measuring ten meters in diameter and fifteen meters in height, it is considered the biggest chandelier in the world.

The Best Time to Visit

The mosque is impressive at any time of day, but in the late afternoon it reveals its true magic. Around 5:00 p.m., the warm light bathes the white domes and the vast courtyard in golden tones. This is when the most stunning photos are taken.

We chose this time intentionally and can highly recommend it. This way, you experience the mosque in its full glory and enjoy the atmosphere in the best possible light.
