The ghost village of Al Madam is located in the heart of the desert in the United Arab Emirates. It’s considered a true hidden gem for travelers who want to explore Dubai on their own. In this article, we’ll show you why this abandoned village is worth visiting and what you need to know before you go.
What You’ll Find in This Article
Where is Al Madam Ghost Village and how do you get there?
The abandoned village of Al Madam is located in the Emirate of Sharjah, near the border with Oman. You can reach it from Dubai in about an hour by car. If you’re driving from Al Ain to Ras Al Khaimah, Al Madam lies right along the way, perfect for a scenic stop. We didn’t want to just rush through the desert, we were looking for something unique to explore. Al Madam caught our attention because it sounded mysterious and was easy to reach.
On a previous trip to Cyprus, we had already explored the abandoned town of Varosha near Famagusta. That visit left a lasting impression. Now we were standing in front of another deserted place. But this time, instead of being reclaimed by trees and plants, the village was slowly being swallowed by desert sand.
Driving Through the Desert Dunes of the Emirates
The journey takes you through a stunning desert landscape. Red dunes rise on both sides of the road, and small villages occasionally appear on the horizon. If you’re lucky, you might even spot camels along the roadside.
The area around Al Madam is also known for Dune Bashing*. If you’re in the mood for some action, check out our travel report for more tips and insights.

What Happened When We Arrived – And Why It Wasn’t So Easy
Before our trip, we read that you should park in the nearby industrial zone and walk the rest of the way. That seemed doable. But walking through the desert in over 40°C didn’t seem like the smartest idea.
Once we got there, we realized there was a much better option. A gravel road leads straight to the ghost village. Right at the entrance, you’ll find a small parking area and a gatekeeper watching over the site.
And that’s when we got our first surprise. The man at the gate looked startled. He seemed more used to seeing organized tours and guides* rather than unannounced visitors like us.
He hesitated and didn’t want to let us in at first. But we stayed polite, explained our plans, and asked nicely. After a short chat, he nodded and let us through. “No backpacks,” he said. “Only water. And remember, it’s even hotter inside.”

Guided Tour or Explore on Your Own?
If you’d like to visit Al Madam and prefer a more convenient and secure option, you can join a guided tour. The big advantage: you’re guaranteed access to the ghost village without any gate issues. Plus, you don’t need to worry about directions or parking, which is a real bonus in the desert heat. The tour starts in Dubai and takes you across to the east coast, stopping in Al Madam along the way. You can book the tour here*.

What Awaits You in the Ghost Town of Al Madam?
Beyond the gate lies a place that feels both quiet and surreal. We were completely alone. Not a single other visitor in sight, just sand, sun, and absolute silence.
The small houses stand in a straight row, many of them already swallowed halfway by the desert dunes. Inside, everything is covered in layers of fine sand. You instantly feel it: nature is slowly reclaiming this place.
We were able to enter and explore nearly all of the houses. Only the mosque at the end of the village was closed off. Right next to it stands an unusual art installation, chairs with what appear to be trees growing out of them. In the distance, we could occasionally spot camels passing by. The sun was scorching, the wind carried sand through the empty alleys. And yet, or maybe because of it, this place had a truly unique atmosphere.

Is It Worth Visiting the Ghost Town of Al Madam?
If you’re looking for a unique experience, Al Madam is absolutely worth the detour. This ghost town is quiet, atmospheric, and located just about an hour from Dubai.
Especially if you’re planning a road trip through the Emirates, Al Madam makes a perfect stop along the way. You’ll get to explore an authentic lost place, without the crowds.
Our tip: Go early in the morning, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for a short conversation at the entrance. If you’d rather play it safe, you can simply book a guided tour*.
Our Conclusion
Al Madam is a quiet place that doesn’t impress with flashy attractions, but with its raw atmosphere. If you’re looking for something special off the beaten path, this place will leave a lasting impression.
