Why did we choose the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort in the Czech Republic?
We chose the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort because it is easy to reach from Berlin while still offering a full ski resort experience with well developed infrastructure.
For many people from Berlin and the surrounding region, Austria is the classic destination for a ski holiday. However, the journey is often long and can be tiring. Spindleruv Mlyn is only a few hours away by car and therefore much more relaxed to reach. This short travel distance was a key factor for us.
At the same time, we did not want a simple fallback option. It was important for us to choose a ski resort with reliable lifts, ski rental services, restaurants and good overall organization. Spindleruv Mlyn promised exactly that. This is why we wanted to see for ourselves whether skiing in the Czech Republic can be more than just a compromise.
How does planning and getting to the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort work?
Planning a trip to the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort is straightforward and can largely be done online. In addition, travelling by car is easy and offers a high level of flexibility once you arrive.
After making our decision, we moved straight into preparation. The car needed to be winter ready, snow chains had to be packed and ski passes had to be organised. In addition, we selected a ski rental and booked our accommodation*. We also briefly checked whether our international health insurance was still valid. This is an important point, especially when going on a ski trip abroad.
At first glance, the planning may sound time consuming. In practice, however, it was very manageable. The vignette, ski passes and accommodation can all be booked conveniently online. The ski rental process is also well organised. We even managed to find a beautiful apartment directly next to the slopes in the Labská area at short notice.

What were our first impressions of the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort?
Our first impressions were mixed, as there was very little snow in the town itself and only part of the ski area was open.
We set off early at 7:00 in the morning. Traffic was light and the drive was relaxed. The closer we got, the more wintery the landscape became.
However, once we arrived in Spindleruv Mlyn, the first disappointment followed. There was hardly any snow in the town. Ski operations were running, but only about one third of the slopes in the ski area were open. The slope directly next to our accommodation remained closed. At that moment, doubts started to arise. Would this really be enough for a successful ski holiday?
What is skiing like on the Hromovka slopes?
The Hromovka slopes consist mainly of red runs and are therefore demanding for beginners.
Right after arriving, we first went to the ski rental. Renting skis, poles and helmets was quick and straightforward. Afterwards, we headed to the Hromovka lift. The lift is located very close to the centre of Spindleruv Mlyn and offers a large parking area.
The downside became clear very quickly. This area offers almost exclusively red slopes. That was challenging, as one person in our group was skiing for the first time. We briefly considered booking a ski course or private instructor*, which would have been possible either at the rental shop or online.
In the end, however, we decided to explain skiing ourselves. As a result, the first descent took quite a while.
Anyone who skis knows how much mental effort the beginning can take. Starting directly on a red slope only intensifies that feeling. At times, we seriously wondered whether we should stop. Fortunately, our beginner showed real talent and slowly gained confidence. We repeated the slope several times until the lift closed and it became dark. For the arrival day, that was more than enough.
Winter conditions and snow chains in Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort in late December
Heavy snowfall in late December made snow chains necessary in the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort and clearly shaped our daily routine throughout the entire stay. Snow started falling on the very first evening and did not stop for the rest of the week. Within just a few hours, so much snow accumulated that we could no longer reach our apartment without snow chains. The road leading up to it is steep and quickly became impassable.
About one hundred metres before the accommodation, the wheels suddenly started spinning. There was no way forward. At that moment, it became clear that we would not make it uphill without snow chains. We had taken this into account during planning, as snow chain regulations can apply in the Czech Republic during heavy snowfall. That evening, we stood on the road in the dark and fitted the snow chains for the first time. For us, this was completely new territory, and not everything went smoothly. After around thirty minutes, we finally made it up to the apartment.
This situation repeated itself over the following days. Each time, it became a little quicker. By the end of the trip, fitting the snow chains only took a few minutes and had become a completely normal part of everyday life.
Why are the Medvědín slopes ideal for beginners?
The Medvědín slopes offer several blue runs, plenty of space and generally low crowd levels, which makes them particularly beginner friendly.
For our next ski day, we took a closer look at the piste map. In the Medvědín area, several blue slopes were open. This sounded much more relaxed and, above all, easier for our beginner. As a result, we decided to switch to this area.
The following morning, our car was covered by a thick layer of snow. We decided to leave it parked and no longer drive to the slopes ourselves. Instead, we used the ski buses. The bus schedule is easy to understand and the connections work reliably.
The slopes at Medvědín impressed us straight away. There are wide runs as well as narrower pistes that quietly lead through the forest. We liked this combination so much that we spent the rest of our ski holiday exclusively skiing here. The lifts were not overcrowded and getting back to the top was quick. Our beginner gained confidence rapidly and even tried small jumps on the slopes by the second day.
What is the atmosphere like on the mountain and in the town of Spindleruv Mlyn?
Spindleruv Mlyn offers a relaxed atmosphere, good infrastructure and a pleasant town centre.
At the very top of Medvědín, at an altitude of 1,235 metres, there is a large and modern mountain restaurant. We regularly took lunch breaks there, ate and warmed up. In the evenings, we usually spent time in the centre of Spindleruv Mlyn, going for walks, browsing the shops and dining in various restaurants.
From a culinary point of view, the Czech Republic differs from Austria. Instead of Kaiserschmarrn, dishes such as goulash and traditional Czech cuisine dominate the menus. We enjoyed this a lot.
However, getting to the town centre always required some effort. Clearing snow from the car and fitting the snow chains became part of the routine.

However, we did not see this as a disadvantage. The scenery is beautiful, the slopes are spacious and, above all, not overcrowded. This allowed us to ski at a relaxed pace and use the lifts frequently without long waiting times.
The town offers everything you need for a successful ski holiday. Ski rental shops, ski buses, short distances and many good restaurants create a pleasant overall atmosphere. We were particularly impressed by the short and stress free journey, especially when compared to longer trips to the Alps. For us, Spindleruv Mlyn is more than just an alternative to Austria thanks to its proximity and complete infrastructure. We enjoyed a relaxed and thoroughly successful ski holiday.
