For our trip to Cyprus, it was clear from the beginning that we would take a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon. Besides the crystal-clear, turquoise-blue sea, it offers a wonderful opportunity to swim with sea turtles. To clarify: There are two well-known Blue Lagoons in Cyprus. One is on the Akamas Peninsula, and the other is in Ayia Napa. Our tour took us to the Blue Lagoon in Ayia Napa*, where you can experience turtles up close near Turtle Beach if you’re lucky.
This boat tour is actually one of the most popular excursions and was also one of our personal highlights in Cyprus.
The Challenge: Two Canceled Boat Tours to the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus
We booked the boat tour early online, but the provider canceled it last minute due to strong winds. Our second attempt was also canceled due to supposedly windy conditions, even though the sea seemed calm.
These cancellations made us question whether we should book the tour* again. Finally, we chose a different provider and a new date. This time, everything went smoothly, and the trip took place as planned. Here, you can see the provider* with whom it worked out.
Our new route from Ayia Napa: Boat Tour to the Blue Lagoon Cyprus
Originally, we planned a three-hour tour from Protaras*, which would take us along Cape Greco and Konnos Beach to spot turtles. After the two cancellations, we finally opted for a four-and-a-half-hour tour from Ayia Napa*. This route took us past impressive sea caves, then on to Cape Greco, and finally to the Blue Lagoon and Turtle Beach.
The turquoise shimmering water along this coast is simply breathtaking, and the beaches around Ayia Napa, especially the nearby Nissi Beach, are among the most beautiful in all of Europe for us.
Our boat trip to the Blue Lagoon: Tips for starting and enjoying the experience on board
Our boat tour began at 10 a.m., with boarding starting as early as 9 a.m. We arrived around 9:20 a.m. and noticed that many passengers were already there, so it’s worth getting there early.
The crew was in high spirits and created a relaxed atmosphere on board. With clear sunshine and temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius at the end of October, we cruised comfortably along the coast. The stunning rock formations, the famous “Bridge of Love,” and Cape Greco provided plenty of photo opportunities.
First Stop: Swimming and Snorkeling in the Blue Lagoon
Our first swim stop took us to the stunning Blue Lagoon, a true paradise for swimmers and snorkelers. Many passengers immediately dove into the crystal-clear, warm water to explore the underwater world. You could jump straight from the boat or even from the four-meter-high deck, which some used for impressive dives. The water was pleasantly warm, even at the end of October—a significant difference compared to the Algarve at the same time of year.
The Highlight: Swimming with Turtles at Turtle Beach
The undisputed highlight was the stop at Turtle Beach for swimming with turtles. Of course, there is no guarantee that the turtles will be there when the boat arrives, but we were lucky as three large turtles immediately came close to the boat.
The crew emphasized treating the animals with respect: keeping at least two meters away, not chasing or touching them. Unfortunately, not everyone followed these rules.
At Konnos Beach, we had the chance to swim with the turtles. They often came so close that we had to swim away to maintain distance. With our snorkel masks, we could see not only the turtles but also some schools of fish directly below us.
Lunch and return to the port of Ayia Napa
After another swimming stop, those who had booked lunch had the opportunity to eat on board. Although we opted out, the food looked really delicious. Finally, we headed back to the harbor of Ayia Napa.
Even though we have done several boat tours before, we are not particularly sea-proof. However, the sea was very calm that day, and no one got seasick. The boat only rocked briefly near the lighthouse at Cape Greco.
Conclusion of the Blue Lagoon Boat Tour in Cyprus: An unforgettable experience you shouldn’t miss.
