The Hike Through the Avakas Gorge

Shortly after starting your hike, you will notice that the initial gravel path quickly disappears. The trail then leads into the wilderness, following the small Avgas River. The path becomes increasingly adventurous, and in many places, there is no clearly defined route.

The main gorge, which you may recognize from photos, is about a 30-minute walk from the starting point. Here, the small river has carved an impressive limestone landscape over thousands of years. In some places, the gorge is only four meters wide, while the rock walls rise over 30 meters high. This section is cooler and darker, enhancing the unique atmosphere.

A True Adventure in the Wild

As you continue, the hike becomes more adventurous. You will climb over rocks, navigate through underbrush, and balance on stones to cross the river. Occasionally, you will need to duck under low-hanging branches. If you slip, you might get wet feet. This happened to us as well.

During our hike, we saw plenty of small lizards and even a few goats. Unfortunately, we also came across two dead animals. The deeper you go into the wilderness, the more challenging it becomes to determine the correct path. We used Google Maps to navigate to the viewpoint at the end of the river. From the parking area, it is about four kilometers to the viewpoint. Altogether, the round trip is approximately eight kilometers.

Tips for Visiting the Avakas Gorge

To ensure that your visit to the Gorge goes smoothly, we have some important tips for you.

Avakas Gorge Parking

Many blogs recommend parking at the first or second lot, as the unpaved road can be difficult to navigate. However, we found the gravel road to be relatively smooth. Even with our low-clearance rental car, we managed to drive to the barrier near the waterpoint without any issues.

By driving further, you save about one and a half kilometers of walking through barren and dusty terrain. For us, parking at the last available spot was definitely the right choice.

The Hiking Route Through the Avakas Gorge

The viewpoint at the end of the trail is not particularly spectacular. It is perfectly fine to walk about 20 minutes past the gorge and then turn back. However, if you are eager for a longer adventure, you can continue all the way to the viewpoint.

Safety Tips

Avoid visiting the gorge during rain. The rocks become extremely slippery, and the river can quickly turn into a rushing stream. Warning signs at the entrance highlight these risks. Make sure to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy, non-slip hiking shoes to stay safe.

Plan Your Hike

Start your hike early to avoid finishing in the dark. There is no lighting along the trail, and internet coverage is not always reliable. Even in daylight, finding the correct path can be tricky. Allocate enough time and consider using an offline map for navigation.
