Which highlights are worth seeing on a weekend trip to Füssen?
A weekend trip to Füssen is especially worth it because the distances are short and the region is packed with highlights. We were able to combine several sights comfortably over one weekend. So if you want to mix nature with famous landmarks, this area is a great choice.
Füssen Old Town and the High Castle
We started by exploring Füssen Old Town. The colorful houses and small streets felt lively and well kept. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants where you can take a relaxed break.
Right next to the old town, you will find the first architectural highlight, the High Castle. The walk up is easy and definitely worth it. Once at the top, we enjoyed a beautiful view over the town and the surrounding mountains. From the High Castle, you can immediately see how close Füssen is to the Alps.
Schwangau as the Ideal Base for Your Trip
Our hotel* was located in Schwangau, and this really paid off. We were able to reach all the main sights within just a few minutes. From here, we drove to the castles and to Alpsee. The short distances made the entire trip much more relaxed. For us, Schwangau is the best place to stay if you want to explore several highlights without stress.
Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau
We already spotted Neuschwanstein Castle from a distance on our way there, and we immediately understood why it is so famous. Its location in the mountains feels impressive and almost unreal. Hohenschwangau Castle is located very close by, and interestingly, we actually liked it even more. It feels more authentic and sits beautifully above Alpsee.
Good to know: Photography and filming are not allowed inside the castles.
Tip: If you want to visit the castles from the inside, make sure to book your tickets in advance. Even during the off season, tickets are often sold out. The best option is to book directly via the official website hohenschwangau.de, as it is the easiest and most affordable choice.
Alpsee as a peaceful contrast
After all these impressions, we headed down to Alpsee. The water was calm and reflected the surrounding mountains beautifully. We took a conscious break here and simply enjoyed the atmosphere. For us, Alpsee was the most peaceful moment of the entire trip.
Reutte and the Highline179
To finish our trip, we drove about 30 minutes to nearby Reutte in Austria. This is where you will find the Ehrenberg Castle World with several historic sites. The absolute highlight here is the Highline179.
The suspension bridge connects two castles and stretches high above the valley. We walked across it and enjoyed wide views of the surrounding landscape. The height and perspective make this a unique experience. For us, the Highline179 was the most intense moment of the trip and offers a completely different perspective. Besides the bridge, you can also explore several castles and discover the area at your own pace.
You need at least two to three days to explore the main highlights around Füssen. We visited Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Alpsee and even Reutte comfortably over a weekend.
