Stuttgart usually isn’t at the top of most people’s city trip bucket lists. Berlin, Hamburg, or Munich are often the top choices. We ended up in Stuttgart more or less by chance and were genuinely surprised by the mix of historic architecture, modern urban design, and the city’s relaxed atmosphere.
Top Sights in Stuttgart’s Historic City Center
Of course, we started our visit around Schlossplatz. What makes this area so special is that you can not only enjoy a nice meal or relax with a coffee in a deck chair, you’ll also find many of Stuttgart’s top sights within a short walking distance.

New Palace and Old Castle

The New Palace is located right on Schlossplatz. Its baroque facade is a real eye-catcher, and the fountains surrounding it look especially beautiful when illuminated at night.
Right next to it is the Old Castle. You can simply walk into the charming inner courtyard, it’s free to access and definitely worth a quick stop. Its more modest look is what gives it that unique historic charm. Both buildings are easy to explore on foot.
Schillerplatz

Just a few steps away from Schlossplatz lies Schillerplatz. Surrounded by half-timbered buildings, cobblestones, and the historic Collegiate Church, the square feels peaceful and almost village-like. We especially loved the relaxed atmosphere mixed with deep history.
Stuttgart Market Hall

The Market Hall is a true highlight. Between Art Nouveau details, local specialties, and international food stands, we found it hard to choose. In the morning, the selection is best and the light streaming through the high windows adds to the charm.
Shopping on Königstraße

From the Market Hall, you walk straight into Königstraße, Stuttgart’s main shopping street. It’s full of energy, with stores, cafés, street performers, and lots of life. Perfect for a short break or a bit of browsing between sightseeing stops.
Modern Architecture in Stuttgart
The Staatsgalerie is located just a few minutes from Schlossplatz. The building combines classical architecture with bold colors and unusual shapes. If you have extra time, it’s worth a quick stop. Otherwise, you can skip it without missing out too much.
Stuttgart City Library at Mailänder Platz

The Stuttgart City Library is about a 20-minute walk from Schlossplatz. From the outside, it looks rather modest. But inside, it stuns with its modern, almost futuristic design. For us, it was one of the absolute highlights in Stuttgart – and entry is free.
The enormous square atrium on the ground floor rises several levels and feels like something out of a science fiction movie. It gets even more spectacular as you go higher: the open floors are linked by offset staircases that form a striking architectural sculpture. Naturally, you’ll need to be quiet – it’s a functioning public library, not a tourist attraction. Maybe that’s exactly what makes it so special, and still something of a hidden gem in Stuttgart.
Address – Stuttgart City Library

Tip: Right next door is the Milaneo, a modern shopping center with lots of stores, cafés, and restaurants. We stopped here for a break and grabbed something to eat before continuing our tour.
Exciting Things to Do in Stuttgart

Porsche and Mercedes-Benz
Stuttgart is famous around the world for Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. Both museums are located a bit outside the city center but are easy to reach by train. If you have enough time, visiting both is absolutely worth it, especially for car enthusiasts.

Stuttgart TV Tower
If you’re looking for the most spectacular view over Stuttgart and still have some time left, then a trip to the TV Tower in the Degerloch district is a great choice. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to visit, but we could see it from our hotel room. The view is said to be breathtaking.

Hotel Tip: Maritim Hotel Stuttgart

We stayed at the Maritim Hotel Stuttgart* and can highly recommend it. The rooms were clean and quiet, and the breakfast was excellent. What we loved most: there’s an indoor pool and a small gym. The location is very convenient—central yet peaceful.
Restaurant Tip: Ochs’n Willi
If you’re craving traditional Swabian cuisine, Ochs’n Willi is a great choice. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy, and the menu features classics like Maultaschen and Spätzle. A perfect place to unwind after a long day.
Our Verdict: Best Things to See in Stuttgart in One Day
Stuttgart truly surprised us. The city is calm, stylish, and more diverse than we expected. We especially loved the City Library, the Market Hall, and the lively area around Schlossplatz. If you only have one day—yes, it’s worth it!
