We spent a short trip in Cologne with only one full day to explore. That’s why we focused on discovering the most important sights on foot. In this article, we’ll take you along our route through Cologne and show you the highlights you can easily experience in one day.
Cologne is one of the largest cities in Germany and offers a mix of history, Rhine romance, and the unique Kölsch lifestyle. Even though we have visited several times, we always discover something new. Our tips will help you experience the best things to do in Cologne in one day and make your city trip unforgettable.

Cologne Cathedral – the city’s most famous landmark
As soon as we arrived at the main train station, we found ourselves standing right in front of Cologne Cathedral. This monumental building towers over the city and immediately captures your attention. We definitely recommend stepping inside. You’ll find impressive stained-glass windows and a unique atmosphere. We were especially fascinated by the way the colorful light filled the entire space. If you have enough time, climbing the tower is worth the effort – the panoramic view over Cologne is a true highlight.

Cologne Old Town and Rhine Promenade – discover Cologne on foot
After visiting the Cathedral, we continued into the Old Town. We strolled through the narrow streets and admired the colorful houses along the Rhine. Walking along the promenade was relaxing, and we enjoyed watching the passing ships. In a traditional brewhouse, we sampled a freshly poured Kölsch beer and some hearty local specialties – the perfect way to experience Cologne’s authentic charm.

Hohenzollern Bridge – Cologne attraction with love locks
From the Old Town, we walked straight to the Hohenzollern Bridge. Even from a distance, the countless love locks glittering in the sunlight caught our attention. We crossed the bridge on foot and kept pausing to enjoy the views of the Rhine and Cologne Cathedral. The colorful locks tell little stories and make the walk across especially romantic.

Cologne Triangle – top viewpoint over the city
On the opposite side of the Rhine, we visited the Cologne Triangle. The elevator quickly took us up to the panorama platform. From there, we enjoyed unobstructed views of the Cathedral, the bridges, and the entire city. We especially liked the glass barrier, which makes it easy to take photos without railings in the way. Watching the sunset from here was an unforgettable experience – one of our favorite moments in Cologne.

Shopping in Cologne – lively streets full of choice
To end our day, we strolled along Schildergasse and Hohe Straße. These streets are always buzzing with life and lined with countless shops, boutiques, and department stores. We enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere and browsing through the variety on offer. For anyone who loves shopping, these two streets are a must-see in Cologne.

Rhine River Cruise – Cologne attractions from the water
If you have a little extra time, we highly recommend taking a Rhine River Cruise*. The departure points are right next to the Hohenzollern Bridge. Even a short trip is worthwhile, as you’ll enjoy unique views of the Cathedral and Cologne’s skyline from the water. An evening cruise is especially atmospheric, with the city lights reflecting on the river.
