Basel is not often considered a top destination for a city trip, but after visiting three times, we can say with confidence that it deserves more attention. This charming city has a lot to offer, and we will show you why it should be on your travel list.
The Unique Location of Basel
Basel sits at the meeting point of Switzerland, France, and Germany, which gives it a distinctly multicultural atmosphere. The influence of different cultures is reflected in the city’s architecture, cuisine, and relaxed way of life. Locals are friendly, open-minded, and enjoy a high quality of life, which adds to Basel’s reputation as one of Switzerland’s coolest cities.
The city is also well connected to international travel. It shares EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg with the nearby cities of Freiburg in Germany and Mulhouse in France, making it an easy and convenient destination to reach.
If you are taking a road trip to Basel by car, you will find several exciting attractions along the way. Just an hour north of Basel, near Freiburg, you will find Germany’s largest amusement park, the Europa-Park Rust*.
Also just an hour away is the Feldberg, home to the Steinwasen Park, a smaller but beautifully located amusement park in the mountains. We have visited both parks on our road trips and had a great time every time.
Tip: Avoid visiting the parks on weekends, as long waiting times for attractions are common.
The Rhine – Basel’s River and a Touch of the Mediterranean
The Rhine River plays a central role in Basel. Unlike in many other cities along the Rhine, where the river is mostly used for transport, in Basel it is the heart of city life. The riverbanks are lined with restaurants, cafés, bars, and swimming spots. In summer, locals gather here to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere along the water.
One of Basel’s most unique traditions is Rhine swimming. During the summer months, locals jump into the river and let the current carry them downstream. There are plenty of designated spots along the banks where swimmers can enter and exit safely.
The east side of the Rhine is considered the safer side for swimming. This area, known as the Basel Riviera, is part of the Kleinbasel district. Here, you can experience a surprisingly Mediterranean vibe.
Many townhouses in Basel have gardens with palm trees, most likely the hardy Ticino palm. While palm trees do not naturally grow in the region, they seem to have adapted well, adding to the city’s unique charm.
The combination of Basel’s mild climate, the Rhine as a central swimming area, and the abundance of palm trees in the city gives it a distinctive Mediterranean feel.

Things to Do in Basel – Top Activities and Attractions
Swimming in the Rhine is one of the most exciting things to do in Basel. On our third visit, we finally took the plunge and swam in the river alongside the locals. Luckily, we had some great advice from friends, which made the experience much easier and safer.
As a major waterway, the Rhine is generally considered too dangerous for swimming. However, Basel has introduced several safety measures that allow people to enjoy the river. That does not mean it is risk-free—ships still navigate the river, and strong currents or whirlpools can be hazardous in certain areas.
Top 3 Tips from Our Friends for Swimming in the Rhine:
- You must be a strong swimmer to participate.
- Only swim on the east side of the Rhine in Kleinbasel.
- When passing under a bridge, stay far away from the bridge pillars.

Tip: Some city fountains are used as pools by locals on hot days. If you want to try it out, bring your swimwear along while exploring the old town and enjoy this unique fountain-swimming tradition.
Basel Minster
Visit Basel Minster, which sits high above the city and is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Take your time to walk through its arches and courtyards. If you are lucky, you might hear a violinist playing classical music in the background.
Secret Whispering Arch: On the left front side of Basel Minster, there is a doorway with a rounded arch. If you whisper into it, the sound will be carried to the other side of the arch—only the person standing there can hear what was said.
Basel Pfalz
Directly behind Basel Minster, you will find the Pfalz Terrace. Walk a few steps towards the Rhine and enjoy the spectacular view from this scenic lookout. The terrace offers panoramic views over the old town, the Rhine, and even the tri-border region.

Roman City Augusta Raurica in Augst
Whenever we get the chance to visit ancient excavation sites or ruins on our travels, we always look forward to it. Some of our highlights include exploring the world-famous ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. But did you know that Basel also has its own Roman city?
If you are traveling by car, you will find Augusta Raurica, a Roman archaeological site, about 20 minutes west of Basel’s city center. The site has two large parking areas. The highlights include a grand amphitheater and impressive ruins. You can also explore the museum and the Villa Rustica.
Tip – Roman Festival: If you are visiting Basel in August, check the Augusta Raurica website to see when the Roman Festival takes place. We attended the festival and had an incredible time. The site comes to life with actors in authentic costumes, reenacting Roman traditions and daily life.
